Fairfax County Parks and Recreation-From its beautiful and plentiful parks to its numerous RECenters and community centers, Fairfax County is the perfect place to have fun, relax and learn something new.
Parktakes Online-for searching and registering for classes of all kinds
ReCenters-there are nine recreation centers throughout the County, and each one offers something special. Audrey Moore-located in Annandale, has all the standard features of pool and exercise areas plus a pottery lab and kiln, an arts and crafts room, a photography lab, and a senior center.
Cub Run-in Chantilly, a newer leisure entertainment pool includes a 30-foot-high slide that exits the building in an enclosed tube, a 20-foot-high slide with an open tube, a spa, a vortex, a current channel, an open shallow water area and a water playground with interactive play features, a tiny-tot slide and a zero depth entry...in addition to the regular competition pool and exercise facility.
Lee District-just completed extensive renovations in Alexandria, that includes a much brighter pool facility. Also has an indoor track and is home to one of the most popular PreSchool programs, as well as a soft play room for younger children.
Mount Vernon-located in Alexandria, near the GW Parkway, the pool area includes a zero entry area for kids to play in fountains and buckets that dump water. Another perk for this one is the year round indoor ice skating rink and all the classes that facilitates.
South Run-in Springfield just off of the Fairfax County Parkway, highlights include a zero entry pool, a dog park area, and a field house with new artificial turf playing surface for a variety of sports.
Providence-in Falls Church.
Oak Marr-in Oakton, with an adjoining Golf Complex.
Spring Hill-in McLean, also hosts a fantastic pool and PreSchool classroom.
Parks:
Lake Accotink-493 acres in Springfield include a 55-acre lake, wetlands, and streams offering unique views of waterfowl and marsh life as well as facilities and activities that vary with the season.
Burke Lake-888 acres in Fairfax Station comprised of a 218-acre lake with fishing, boating, rowboat rental, camping, a miniature train, a carousel, outdoor volleyball courts, open fields, an 18-hole par 3 golf course, clubhouse with snack bar and driving range, disk golf, horse shoe pits, an ice cream parlor, picnic areas with grills, 3 playgrounds, trails, amphitheater, and a brand new miniature golf course.
Lake Fairfax-a host of campground options in Reston, and is home to my favorite
Water Mine Swimmin' Hole-a western theme activity pool with an acre of interactive play features, including Rattlesnake River, Box Canyon Crossing, slides and flumes - all designed with kids in mind. In addition, the park has an 18-acre lake with pedal boat rentals, tour boat rides and fishing in both the lake and seasonally-stocked trout stream.
Northern Virginia Regional Park Authority-you can surely find something to do in one of the 21 Regional Parks.
Bull Run-my favorite in Centreville, Bull Run's spacious fields accommodate groups by the hundreds, even thousands, for picnics, camping or special events. Bull Run's scenic woodland and trails offer miles of hiking and solitude. In springtime, acres of bluebells and other wildflowers bloom beside a picturesque, meandering stream. A large outdoor pool is open Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day. Disc golf is open April through October. A public shooting center, which includes sporting clays, skeet, trap, wobble trap and indoor archery, is open year-round. Home to a relatively new
Atlantis theme Water Park for summer fun, and the
Festival of Lights to drive through for the Holidays.
Pohick Bay-also another nice one on the Potomac River, their boat launch facility is one of only 3 public access points to the Potomac River in northern Virginia and the closest to Washington DC and its famous waterfront. They offer canoes, kayaks, paddle boats and jon boats for rent on the weekends. It also has a brand new
Pirates Cove themed waterpark to cool off in the summer...geared for younger children.
The National Park Service also maintains many nice outdoor options for our region. I've highlighted just a couple below.
Great Falls-my favorite when you want a little more self-entertaining and nature, this park is great for picnics, hiking the trails overlooking three waterfalls, biking, fishing, rock climbing, horseback riding, or watching the experienced boaters navigating the Potomac River in kayaks and canoes.
Theodore Roosevelt Island-Just off of the GW Parkway, the Island has several gentle nature trails and boardwalk that allow visitors to escape from the urban environment to view wildlife in the forest and swamp and learn about the rich history of the island.
Dog Parks-off leash dog areas maintained by the County
Gymnasiums: A variety of national chains mixed with smaller locally owned facilities will certainly give you plenty of opportunities to stay fit on your schedule. A few favorites are below.

Sportrock-the premier indoor climbing experience for our area. Locations in Sterling and Alexandria, which is under an enormous expansion renovation, offer rock climbing instruction, classes in yoga and pilates, birthday parties, corporate events, or just recreation and community for area climbers.
Top Golf-is more than just a golf driving range ? it is a revolutionary sports entertainment complex combining games with great food and an environment you can enjoy year-round with friends and family of all skill levels. TopGolf features computerized microchips in every golf ball that track your shots accuracy and distance while awarding points by hitting targets ranging from 20 - 250 yards away. They also have two mini-golf courses. The only facility like it in Virginia, and it's in Alexandria!
Golf Courses-There are WAY too many in our area to highlight here, but this is a good list to get you started when you want a little tee time.
